We open shop as Standard Electric, a family-owned company with four employees and one service truck, in Rocky Mount, NC. We earn the nickname “refrigeration pioneer” for installing the first air-conditioning system in town. Residential contracting work sees us through the Depression and the postwar housing boom.
Lynell Bynum, a Standard Electric employee since 1946, purchases the company and begins the shift into heavy commercial and industrial markets – specialty areas where we still focus today. We continue on a trajectory of steady growth.
Harry Bynum, Lynell’s son, becomes president of Standard Electric. He reorganizes the company and changes the name to SE&M Constructors to better identify us as a full-service mechanical, electrical, and plumbing contractor. We complete our first project greater than $6 million.
We relocate to a more modern facility in Elm City, conveniently located between Rocky Mount and Wilson, NC. Our new location provides improved efficiency in the office and more warehouse space for state-of-the-art equipment and fabrication capabilities, all to better serve our customers.
We secure our first project greater than $20 million. With a second office – opened in Raleigh in 2019 – and investments in laser scanning technology and BIM professionals, we are well positioned as we approach our 100th anniversary to continue delivering innovative, trusted results to our customers.
